How to enjoy running? – 11 tips for unconvinced

Running for many people is associated with fatigue, colic, muscle pain, and stopping after a few hundred meters because the body can’t cope with running anymore. You probably know some people who run and even love it!

You, however, are not convinced about this sport? Or maybe you want to start running and it has been your New Year’s resolution? In this article, I’ll show you how to like running and that it doesn’t have to be associated only with fatigue at all. Running is enjoyable. I hope these tips will show you how to love running and that they will help you finally fulfill your resolutions and enjoy your workouts at different times of the year, just like others.

How to enjoy running? – the beginnings will be difficult

If you think that you will be able to run for a long time right away, or that after a few workouts your fitness will be at a very high level, then I must immediately pour a bucket of cold water on you. This will not be the case. Even if you are a young person and think that running 1 km is not a problem you are wrong. I found this out myself when I started exercising running 600m without stopping was torture. That’s why you need to start slowly and calmly.

The beginning will be difficult. You know the saying “Rome was not built in a day?” You won’t immediately start running for a long time without getting out of breath. But remember, this is just the beginning. After that, it will get better and better, until you finally reach a form where running will be a great pleasure and you will want to jump into your running shoes again.

Don’t get discouraged after your first attempt. Think how many amazing athletes we would have missed if they also gave up after the first attempt. It is through effort that anything is possible…after this, who knows maybe you will like running 😉

1. Learn how to run

“What? Running is so easy. Is there anyone who can’t run? Pff”

Just putting your left and right legs alternately quickly is not exactly running – and certainly not correct. To enjoy running, you must learn to run well technically. However, that’s not all. Many beginners do not know how to put their feet, how to breathe, or how to move their arms. All these elements are very important.

If you do it wrong, then you only get tired and do not get satisfaction from running. Then it’s no wonder that after a few workouts you get fed up, throw your running shoes into the corner, and forget about the sport for a long time. How to like running? Before you start running, read a few articles that will help you eliminate technical mistakes. This will make running much more enjoyable and after a while, you will start to like running.

2. Find your running pace with the music

Many runners often can’t find a good running pace. Therefore, they cannot fully enjoy the sport. Especially when they impose too high a pace on themselves, to begin with. They immediately think they are weak and therefore can’t make it.

Music – or more precisely, the right playlist – will help you maintain the right pace. In the beginning, you can listen to the random music of your favorite band. But over time, choose specific music. Yes, I know that’s when you run best listening to your fav tracks, but often your body runs at the pace that the music sets. Therefore, you may be running too fast for your aptitude.

Therefore, create a playlist with the right rhythm for running. How to do it. You can find many sites on the Internet that show BPM (beats-per-minute). Choose a tempo for yourself, and then look for songs that fit into your running rhythm. It’s always more fun to train with music 🙂

3. Start by walking

You don’t have to start running right away. The best way is to start easily with…a walk. You read the right word, with a walk.

“But a walk is not a run”

No, it’s not a run, but by walking you can get used to the effort. If you haven’t done anything athletic for a long time then even a long walk can make you tired. It’s better to start slowly – baby steps. Walk for about 40 minutes. During this time you can also trot a little. It can be a dozen seconds, a few minutes – as much as you can manage. Remember that this exertion should, above all, be pleasant. You’re supposed to get back home on two legs, not crawling to your house, because you can’t stand on your legs.

Start your workouts with walking, then trotting, and after a while, you can move on to running. This way you won’t be discouraged from running right away. You will gradually and effectively get used to it. Take small steps forward!

4. Sign up for funny competitions

When you see the word “competition,” you probably think “effort, struggle, drama.” Not in this case. If you start running, find some motivation. Typically it is to lose weight and to have a better lifestyle. However, here – sign up for a funny competition. What does that mean? “Just for fun” competitions.

This does not mean marathons, half-marathons, or fighting against yourself. There are many events where there is a fun atmosphere. You can take part in a run of colors, dressed as an elf or Santa Claus, or where there is bacon waiting for you at the finish line. There are many such runs. Look for them in your area. It’s a good opportunity to have fun and get motivated and through such events to like running.

5. Buy cool clothes in your style

If you want to start running, you think about the right outfit. Start with shoes, which are the most important. They must be comfortable, that’s the most important thing! In well-fitting shoes, you will finally be able to enjoy your workouts.

Next, think about a T-shirt, and sports leggings. In addition to comfort, also look at the design. After all, you won’t buy the first better garment in the store. You will find many designs and colors online and in stationary stores. Choose clothes that you like. Then there’s a better chance you’ll want to wear it and go out for a run.

And even if you don’t find the perfect design for you, you can personalize your T-shirt. Then you’ll want to wear it even more.

6. Watch other runners

See how others are running. Not only live but also on the Internet, you can find videos that show the perfect physique.

Sometimes just reading about correct posture and technique is not enough. That’s why it’s worth looking at how people who have already been running for a while. You will see how beautifully their body is arranged during each movement.

7. Don’t compare yourself to other runners

You can watch them, but never compare yourself.

I often hear people not wanting to run because: “Other runners are not breathless, others look better, others run faster”.

That’s because they’ve already had their first runs and have certainly been practicing for a few months or even years. Remember that they too were at the beginning of their journey and also had the same problems as you!

At the very beginning, don’t worry about time. Run as much as you can and at your own pace. Week by week, with regular training and recovery your fitness will improve and you will be able to run faster and more without getting out of breath.

8. Don’t overdo it

Many people want to give their best from the very first training. Don’t try to become a professional overnight. Such a course of action will not do any good. You will only end your training with a lot of fatigue, a short distance, colic, and huge soreness the next day. This will make you not feel like continuing to run.

First, run every other day for about 30-40 minutes. When you don’t have the strength, switch to trotting or walking. Don’t overtire yourself. If you can’t handle it, run for a shorter time. With every workout, your fitness and ability will get better and better. Regular training will bring results.

9. Post-workout ritual

To motivate yourself to go out and train, think about what your reward will be when you return. Yes, it’s worth rewarding yourself.

When I get back from training I will: watch my favorite TV series, take a bath, lie under a blanket, read a book, and listen to music. Choose what can motivate you the most. Then you’ll be more eager to go to training – because you’ll do it with an idea of what you’ll do afterward.

Such “bribery” at the beginning of your running adventure is even advisable. After a while, you will want to go out for a run without any additional encouragement.

10. Find a buddy to run with

If you want to start running, but find it hard to get motivated then…find a friend to accompany you during your workouts. Running together immediately makes you feel better.

It doesn’t have to be your close friend. There are many groups on social media where you can make friends with someone who lives nearby and then run together. Nothing brings people together like running together and…complaining about running. It’s not always fun.

11. Install running apps

Running apps can motivate and convince you to start doing this sport. Install the best one for you. It will allow you to track your progress and see how you are improving your fitness.

What’s more, many apps have a voice coach to motivate you for more workouts. Each app has something unique that can convince you to do the training.

A normal app won’t motivate you? How about a survival game where you have to run away from Zombies and collect supplies along the way? Or an app where by running kilometers you help others? You can find such apps on the Internet, too.

How to enjoy running? Start slowly, and don’t run many kilometers right away (you won’t even be able to do it because you’ll catch breathlessness right away). The first weeks will be the hardest, but after that, it will get better and better. Make your workout more enjoyable with music, and after the workout, it’s time for a good reward.
